The Duc de Luynes, in his Mémoires sur la Cour de Louis XV, recorded that in 1754 'le 4 mars, M. de Vanddières présenta au Roi les ouvrages de peinture et de sculpture faits pendant l'année 1753 par les élèves de l'Académie établie à Paris. Il y avoit en tableaux ... Psyché montre à ses sœurs les présentes qu'elle a reçus de l'Amour, par Fragonard ...' . 'L'Académie établie à Paris' was L'Ecole des Élèves Protégés, founded in 1749for the instruction of outstandingly promising art students.

The next reference to Psyché occurs in the Catalogue d’une collection de tableaux des trois ecoles, et en tapisserie … qui composoient le cabinet du feu Cit.***, Par J.-B.-P. Lebrun, Peintre … le 2 ventôse an V (i.e. 20 February, 1797); the full catalogue entry reads: ‘100 H. Fragonard. La Toilette de Psyché, composition de 16 figures. Ce tableau, fait dans l’Ecole de Boucher, son maître, est d’une composition aussi ingénieuse que d’une couleur agreeable. H. 72 po. L. 84. T.’ (i.e.194.9 x 227.38 cm on canvas; both dimensions of the canvas have since been slightly reduced). The painting was sold for 149.19 livres. In the only recorded copy of this catalogue the name ‘Laferté’ is handwritten against ‘Cit***’. Only one la Ferté is known to have collected pictures: Comte Denis-Pierre_Jean Papillon de la Ferté (born 1727, guillotined 1794), Intendant des Menus Plaisirs from 1762 until the Revolution, and himself as amateur artist.

Psyché, as well as being one of Fragonard’s most ambitious compositions, is certainly the masterpiece of his early youth, astonishingly brilliant and assured for the work of a twenty-one-year-old student. Whoever chose the subject for him (probably his teacher, Charles-André van Loo) must have recognized in him that intoxication with physical beauty, which was to make him the most appealing artist of his age.
